In this two-part workshop led by Kelly Laughlin, participants will explore two processes: paper marbling and bookbinding.
Spend the morning learning suminagashi techniques and creating hand marbled papers. Take a lunch break and eat in the nearby park or grab a bite at some of the local restaurants or cafes to allow the paper to dry.
In the second part of the day, learn about Japanese stab binding techniques utilizing hand marbled paper from the morning.
Participants leave with hand marbled papers, a set of handbound books, and basic bookbinding tools (awl, bone folder, and binding needle) to continue the processes at home. Ticket price includes instruction, cost of materials, and tools. All materials provided. $57.
Kelly Laughlin is an artist, educator, and bookbinder from Baltimore, Maryland. When she's not exploring the varied and experimental ways of paper marbling and bookbinding, she enjoys teaching students at The Walters Art Museum about the wonders of art making and inspiration through historic objects.
